Pierre Bergian

Arrayed throughout our residence in Los Angeles for the occasion of Frieze, a new series of paintings by Pierre Bergian act as intriguing interludes atop the hand-painted and hand-embroidered wall coverings – windows to the interior scenes that typify his work, offering as much an insight into his own self as they do impressively proportioned, historic properties filled with art and sculpture.

Designed as a private home, our West Hollywood abode reflects a decidedly Southern Californian aesthetic: the palettes our ‘Nordic Garden’, ‘Erdem’, ‘Malmaison’, and ‘St. Laurent’ designs reflect the sunshine and colours of Los Angeles, and creating a vivid interplay to Bergian’s decidedly European imagery.

Described as ‘Capriccios’, interior and architectural scenes of his own imagination, the paintings by Pierre Bergian attain a harmonious balance with the tones of the hand-painted and hand-embroidered designs surrounding them.

The green raffias of our ‘Mughal Trees’ wallcovering, hand-embroidered onto linen, illuminate the room within the ‘Abstract Capriccio’ work, while the delicate, sky blue of the ‘Nara’ blossom hand-painted wallpaper is mirrored in the tones of the accompanying works.

The rich hues of brushed and antiqued gold of the ‘Namban’ design background complement the contemplative scene of the Borghese Gallery in Rome.
Within his home studio in Ghent, Belgium, Pierre Belgian paints components of his works on paper, where interiors both real and imagined explore light, space, and structure. The walls are the focus, filled with pictures, sculptures, and ornamental details, while the rooms themselves are sparsely furnished.

Pierre comments “While painting or sketching, I imagine walking through spaces, opening windows, doors, and passages, and then closing others, to create another perspective, light or atmosphere. Sometimes this can be seen on the paintings, where underlying layers of paint, or even interiors, might be visible.”
