A frequent theme in Japanese paintings from the Edo period, stately cranes and willow trees are given a new, textural dimension in this simple, elegant hand-embroidery, ‘Osier’. Incorporating raffia threads and subtle beading, the gestural willow branches, appearing to softly sway in the wind, bring a sense of movement to the design, while charming birds dart beneath the leaves.
