Original colourway on Aqua wool sateen

– ABOUT THIS DESIGN –

In honour of the 1925 International Exposition, Paul Poiret exhibited his couture dresses, furnishings and fragrances on three lavish barges moored on the river Seine. Designed by Atelier Martine, his decorative arts workshop, the Amour barge’s drawing room was an extraordinary realisation of the courtier’s vibrantly coloured and audaciously patterned world. In ‘Zaza’, bold, stylised depictions of jagged palms, cactus, and weeping birch trees nod to the barge’s wood marquetry walls. Upon a striking Aqua wool sateen, silk appliqués form the foliage in large swathes of vivid greens, which are then over-embroidered with intricate linework rendered in cords and cotton and silk threads. This graphic and textured design showcases myriad embroidery techniques, including chain stitch, fishbone stitch, and couching.
