de Gournay's famille rose goose tureen is naturalistically sculpted as a swimming goose with wings folded over its back, the crooked neck and head with beak agape doubling as the handle with which to lift the cover. Such pieces were designed to function as mainly decorative table display items but the interior is also glazed so it can also be used as a functioning tureen. The body is covered with detailed feathers incised into the porcelain under the glaze.
