ARMORIAL BELGRAVE
de Gournay’s Belgrave design was inspired by a design made for James Macrae whilst he was governor of Madras between 1725 and 1731. The well decorated with a finely worked grisaille diaper band containing stylised lotus symbols between a gilt band and gilt spearhead inner rim, the outer border containing fine scrolling gilt vines over iron-red divided by small gilt and iron-red floral outer rim as shown in the drawings below, which also include a coat of arms worked in the same palette as compared to the monogram used for a different client on the cover shot overleaf.
