Napoleon's Campaign in Egypt
Aurore on Eau Forte scenic paper
– ABOUT THIS DESIGN –
In 1818 Velay of Paris published a new mural entitled La Bataille d’Heliopolis, designed by Jean-Julien Deltil and featuring the campaign of Napoleon’s General Kleber in Egypt fighting the Mamelouks. Deltil’s troops and horses were excellently drawn but by comparison the landscape was poor, probably due to his lack of resource materials. When recreating the design, de Gournay painted a new landscape inspired by the wonderful sketches of David Roberts R.A published a decade after Deltil’s original design work.
