Eau Forte on antique scenic Xuan paper

Procession Chinoise

Eau Forte on antique scenic Xuan paper

– ABOUT THIS DESIGN –

Although attributed to the manufacturer Jules Desfossé and dated to the first half of the 19th century, very little is known about this design, not even its original title, de Gournay’s reproduction from surviving examples shows a traditional Chinese landscape at the turn of the 19th Century. The design depicts the port of Canton, showing scenes of merchants loading their ships with cargo, whilst a Buddhist procession weaving through a backdrop of pagodas gives the design its name.
