Korean Peony

Colourway SC-50 on Edo Cannella India tea paper

– ABOUT THIS DESIGN –

Oversized Peony flowers rise towards the sky, the colossal scale creating a sense of being equal amongst the flowers. Based on an original antique folding screen it is painted in the Korean style with expressive brushwork, bold colours and graphic outlines. Peonies were a frequent motif for artists in the early and mid-Joseon Dynasty, often being painted alongside birds and other plants. Later Joseon painters continued the tradition, placing even more emphasis on peonies than earlier paintings, often depicting them without any accompanying birds or plants, and making their blossoms even fuller and more voluptuous.
