Sarus Cranes
Colourway SC-205 on pink metallic slub silk
– ABOUT THIS DESIGN –
The Crane is a symbol of elegance and longevity, a majestic bird that is a favourite subject in paintings of the Edo period in Japanese art. The screens of this era are the inspiration behind ‘Sarus Cranes’. Typical in Edo painting, contrast is created between fine detailing versus areas depicted in an energetic ink wash style. In de Gournay’s design the feathers on the cranes’ elegant long necks are executed in pain-staking detail set against the lively, more fluid looking wing and tail feathers.
