Standard colourway on Edo painted Xuan paper

Belton

Standard colourway on Edo painted Xuan paper

– ABOUT THIS DESIGN –

This design combines the popular theme of colorful birds and pretty butterflies darting between the trunks of a mature bamboo forest with, at the base, a frieze of Chinese characters acting out scenes from everyday 18th-century Chinese life. The figures and birds are presented in the traditional Chinese manner without regard for perspective. The original inspiration for this design is an 18th-century oriental bedroom at Belton house, a favorite of King Edward VIII, who requested it whenever he stayed at Belton.
