Plum Blossom

Colourway SC-81 on Tarnished Silver gilded paper with désargenter pearlescent antiquing
– ABOUT THIS DESIGN –

This design was inspired by a painted white silk Kimono from the late Edo period. In the early 19th century, artist Sakai Hoitsu, who was better known for his work on scrolls and folding screens, turned his hand to the Kimono, painting a blooming plum tree beautifully designed to move with the wearer. The blossoming tree limbs of de Gournay’s design envelope spaces, conveying the same lively movement originally depicted in the Kimono.
